Dawgs drops out of regular season finale in extra inning against Rusk | local sports


The Jasper Bulldogs baseball team traveled to Rusk Friday afternoon for a district contest scheduled for 7 p.m. The Bulldogs lost the regular season finale to the Eagles in an extra inning by a final score of 3–2.

The Rusk Eagles scored the opening goal of the second inning on a first hit by first baseman Tarrant on Sunday against Bulldog starting pitcher Hudson Faircloth. Eagles third baseman Wade Williams then hit an outfielder’s pick by forcing at second base on Sunday. JD Thompson then hit a ground rule double that took a single jump over the left field fence, putting the runners on second and third base. After the next batter was out, second baseman Brett Rawlinson led Williams and Thompson in scoring the two runs.

No runs occurred in the third and fourth innings on superb defensive plays by both teams. In the fifth inning, the Bulldogs’ bats warmed up by scoring two runs on three hits and tying the score at two runs apiece. Brock Lackey of the Bulldogs started the inning with a fly ball to left field. Then three straight singles from Heath Pantoja, Hudson Faircloth and Cason Pool scored the Bulldogs just two runs of the night. The score remained tied at the end of regulation at two points apiece.

In the eighth inning, the Carlton Limbrick Bulldogs managed to reach base on a two-out single. Micah Kendrick then pulled out a strike, ending the Bulldogs scoring opportunity.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Rusk leadoff hitter JD Thompson hits a single from reliever Carlton Limbrick. Limbrick hits Rusk’s next batter.

With the count 1-0 on the next batter, Bulldog catcher Heath Pantoja attempts a tee shot from Thompson to first base. His throw is wide of Bulldog first baseman Seth Ross and travels to the right outfield fence. Thompson is able to score, rounding the bases giving Rusk the victory by a final score of 3 – 2.

The Bulldogs finished with a 4-6 district record, securing the No. 4 seed entering the playoffs next week. They will face China Spring, winner of District 19-4A.

The playoff schedule for next week is set, with all games being played at A&M Consolidated High School located in College Station. Match #1 scheduled for Friday at 7:00 p.m. Game #2 will take place on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Game #3 (if needed) will follow immediately.
